Skill and Competencies

Experience:

  • 2 years of working experience in the operating theatre of a reputed hospital or clinic. Experience of assisting in obstetric surgeries will add value.
  • Working experience in hard-to-reach areas for marginalized communities will add value.
  • Willingness to work in remote settings.

Responsibilities & Context

Responsible for:

1.    Surgical Assistance:

  • Provide nursing assistance in the operating theatre for CEmONC procedures, including cesarean sections, laparotomies, and other obstetric and gynecological surgeries.
  • Prepare the operation theatre before surgeries, ensuring sterility and equipment readiness.
  • Assist the surgeon during operations by passing instruments, maintaining sterility, and ensuring seamless surgical workflows.

2.    Pre- and Post-Operative Care:

  • Prepare patients for surgery by conducting physical exams, checking vitals, and explaining the procedure to patients and families.
  • Monitor post-operative patients in the recovery area, ensuring vital signs are stable and addressing any complications.
  • Support post-operative documentation and discharge processes.

3.    Emergency Preparedness:

  • Be available for emergency surgeries and on-call duties as per the roster.
  • Facilitate referrals and transportation of critical cases to tertiary health facilities when needed.

4.    Equipment and Inventory Management:

  • Ensure all surgical tools and equipment are sterilized and functional.
  • Maintain an adequate stock of OT supplies, including medications, sutures, and sterilization materials.

5.    Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain detailed records of surgical procedures and patient progress.
  • Assist in preparing periodic reports and updates for management or funding bodies.

6.     Team Coordination:

  • Collaborate with doctors, anesthetists, and other nurses to ensure patient safety and positive outcomes.
  • Provide support to other healthcare providers in emergency situations.

7.    Training and Development:

  • Participate in regular capacity-building sessions to stay updated on surgical and nursing best practices.
  • Mentor junior staff and support skill-sharing initiatives.

8.    Other Duties:

  • Perform additional tasks assigned by the line manager or supervisor.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with all healthcare team members and stakeholders.

Activities:

  • Conduct a physical examination on the patient.
  • Take detailed patient histories.
  • Listen to patients and analyze their physical and emotional needs
  • Provide counseling and health care education to patients
  • Coordinate care with other health care providers and specialists
  • Stay current with advances in health care options, medications, and treatment plans
  • Draw blood, and perform other health-related testing
  • Check a patient’s vital signs
