Responsibilities & Context

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Perform routine microbiological testing of raw materials, in-process samples, finished products, and stability samples, conduct sterility testing, microbial limit tests, endotoxin tests, and bioburden testing according to standard protocols, and ensure accurate and timely reporting of test results.
  • Conduct regular environmental monitoring of production areas, including air, water, surfaces, and personnel; collect and analyze environmental samples to detect microbial contamination; prepare and trend environmental monitoring data, reporting any deviations or out-of-specification results.
  • Assist in the development, optimization, and validation of new microbiological methods and techniques, ensuring their accuracy, precision, and reliability through method validation.
  • Ensure proper calibration, maintenance, and operation of microbiological equipment and instruments, performing routine maintenance and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Adhere to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) in all microbiological activities, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and company policies, and participate in internal and external audits and inspections, providing microbiological expertise as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all microbiological tests, results, and observations, prepare and review microbiological reports, validation protocols, and SOPs, and ensure timely and accurate documentation of all microbiological activities in laboratory notebooks and electronic systems.
  • Investigate any microbiological out-of-specification results or contamination events, identify root causes, and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs) to resolve microbiological issues.
  • Provide training and guidance to junior microbiology staff on techniques, procedures, and best practices, stay updated with the latest developments in microbiology and regulatory requirements, and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including production, quality assurance, R&D, and regulatory affairs, to support microbiological aspects of product development and manufacturing, and communicate effectively to ensure smooth workflow and timely completion of microbiological activities.
  • Collect and analyze various biological samples to identify microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.
  • Perform routine and specialized microbiological tests, including culturing, staining, and microscopy, following standard operating procedures.
  • Ensure all laboratory equipment is properly maintained and calibrated, and that all tests are performed with high accuracy and precision.
  • Accurately document all test results and observations, maintaining detailed records for future reference and compliance purposes.
  • Participate in research projects, developing new methods for detecting and analyzing microorganisms, and contributing to scientific publications.
  • Adhere to all laboratory safety protocols, including proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials, and ensure a safe working environment.
  • Prepare detailed reports and present findings to the scientific team, management, and external stakeholders as required.
  • Work closely with other departments, such as Quality Assurance, Production, and R&D, to ensure the microbiological integrity of products and processes.
  • Stay updated with the latest developments in microbiology, including new techniques, technologies, and regulations, and apply this knowledge to improve laboratory practices.
  • Train and supervise junior staff and interns, ensuring they follow proper laboratory procedures and maintain high standards of work.
