Requirements

Education

Graduate degree, preferably in law, journalism, development studies or any other relevant discipline from a recognised university with minimum second Class/Division or equivalent CGPA in all academic examinations

Experience

  • At least 4 years

Additional Requirements

  • Knowledge of human rights trends, particularly on freedom of expression and information in Bangladesh and South Asia is expected
  • Knowledge of international human rights law and awareness of mechanisms for the protection of human rights at international, regional and national level is a plus
  • A minimum of four years of full-time professional experience as journalist is required
  • Additionally, having experience working with development organizations, networks, and volunteer organizations is a must
  • Candidates with experience in research and data management will be given preference
  • Demonstrable experience of work in the field of human rights, with experience of freedom of expression and information issues is a plus
  • Having demonstrable familiarity with project implementation, development and management will be considered an advantage
  • Experience of producing reports/publication/broadcast materials
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Written and spoken fluency in Bangla and English
  • Ability to work effectively, often under pressure, to tight and demanding deadlines
  • Good writing skills, including the ability to write materials suitable for a variety of audiences
  • Excellent IT skills, including Microsoft Office, social media platforms and websites

Responsibilities & Context

The Team and what you’ll be working on

Under the supervision of the Senior Protection Officer, the Media Monitoring Officer will be responsible for monitoring state of freedom of expression and civic space in Bangladesh and South Asia as well as for monitoring legislative, practical, and judicial developments related to freedom of expression, media and civic space in key regions. The role also involves verify and validate incidents involving journalists, communicators, and human rights defenders, while entering, organizing, and regularly updating data within the monitoring tool system to ensure accuracy, completeness, and generate reports. Additionally, the Media Monitoring Officer will contribute to project planning, coordination, and execution, as well as maintaining regular communication with partners and stakeholders.

What you will be doing day to day

  • Implementing project activities and deliverables to ensure that the expected results and objectives are achieved
  • Coordinate and organize workshops, trainings, meetings, dialogues, and seminars for ongoing ARTICLE 19 Bangladesh and South Asia (BSA) projects, ensuring effective implementation at both national and regional levels
  • Regularly monitor and document the state of freedom of expression and civic space in Bangladesh and South Asia (BSA), including the legislative framework related to freedom of expression, media freedom, and other fundamental rights in Bangladesh and key priority countries in the BSA region
  • Verify and validate incidents involving journalists, communicators, and human rights defenders
  • Develop brief case studies on incidents involving journalists, communicators, and human rights defenders, with a particular focus on feminist issues
  • Enter and organize data within the monitoring tool system, ensuring accuracy and completeness by regularly updating with new information, verifying data integrity, and generating reports
  • Prepare periodic reports (monthly, quarterly, yearly) based on the reports generated from the monitoring tool system
  • Collect applications from journalists, communicators, and human rights defenders for support, and prepare and process the necessary support files, ensuring all documentation is thorough and accurate
  • Maintain regular communication with partners, consultants, resource persons, vendors, service providers and other stakeholders
  • Work with the BSA Team and the Fundraising Team to help develop funding proposals for ARTICLE 19’s future projects in the BSA region
  • Undertake other duties commensurate with the role as may reasonably be assigned by the Line Manager
