Experience

  • Minimum of 8-10 years of relevant experience in technical roles within development projects, focusing on aquaculture or fisheries sectors.
  • Experience of working with members of the coastal community fish farmers, traders, and other value-chain stakeholders in the broad area of fisheries and aquaculture sector.
  • Experience of working with smallholder farmers, value-chain stakeholders, and climate-resilient practices in coastal regions.
  • Experience of working in projects which were implemented in close collaboration with the Government of Bangladesh, especially the Department of Fisheries.

Specific Skills

  • Strong technical knowledge of aquaculture practices, hatchery management, and water quality monitoring.
  • Proven ability to conduct training and capacity-building activities effectively.
  • Familiarity with digital tools and M&E systems for aquaculture interventions.
  • Excellent communication skills in English and Bangla.

Responsibilities & Context

Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation (BSFF) is recruiting for Aquaculture Specialist for the Feed the Future Bangladesh Sustainable Aquaculture Activity. The Activity aims to enhance inclusive and sustainable aquaculture sector growth in Bangladesh through a market system approach to improve rural household income and nutrition.

The Aquaculture Specialists will be expected to provide technical expertise and discharge other responsibilities to promote sustainable aquaculture practices under the USAID-funded Bangladesh Sustainable Aquaculture Activity. The selected candidates should have sound academic and professional capabilities and experience of working for the implementation of sector specific development intervention. The selected specialists are expected to have experience of working at the regional and grassroot levels in close collaboration with local farmers, stakeholders, and extension staff to enhance productivity, profitability, and resilience in the aquaculture sector. This role involves delivering technical guidance, facilitating capacity-building initiatives, and fostering public-private partnerships to improve value chain efficiency and market linkages.

Major tasks and responsibilities include:

Technical Guidance and Relevant Responsibility on Promoting Sustainable Improved Aquaculture Practice

  • Provide technical guidance on improved aquaculture practices, including sustainable aquaculture farming, hatchery management, and water quality monitoring.
  • Help design and prepare resource materials on training and awareness programs as well as conduct training sessions and capacity-building initiatives for farmers, and other stakeholders in the fisheries and aquaculture value chain including local extension staffs and other target beneficiaries.
  • Actively work to promote the adoption of innovative technologies, including digital tools and other modern aquaculture practices to improve dynamic sector development and sector resilience.

Capacity Building and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Will play a key role as a member of the Activity team to facilitate collaborations with government agencies, private sector actors, NGOs, and research institutions to strengthen public-private partnerships.
  • Work actively to improve end user-friendly market linkages on aquaculture inputs benefitting farmers, especially to enhance to access to quality inputs and profitability for smallholder farmers.
  • Work for improving the relevant segments of the fisheries and aquaculture value chain in the Activity area.

Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI)

  • Ensure aquaculture activities prioritize the participation of women, youth, and marginalized communities.

Policy Support and Advocacy

  • Facilitate engagement with the stakeholders to support the formulation and implementation of policies promoting sustainable aquaculture growth and food security.

Environmental Sustainability

  • Support the implementation of climate-resilient aquaculture systems aligned with environmental sustainability principles.
  • Work as part of the Activity team for the promotion of eco-friendly aquaculture practices addressing environmental concerns and enhancing community resilience to climate change.

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL)

  • Assist in designing and implementing MEL systems to track progress, effectiveness, and impact of aquaculture interventions.
  • Prepare reports, case studies, and knowledge products to document outcomes, best practices, and lessons learned.
  • Collect, submit and preserve all required financial documents related to training, workshops, and awareness programs according to the scheduled timeline.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Collect and submit financial documents for training, workshops, and awareness programs within prescribed timelines.
  • Responsible for all types of administrative works.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the management of the Activity.
