Job Purpose:

The Biomedical Engineer specializing in Laboratory Services will be responsible for the effective and safe operation, maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and management of all biomedical equipment and instrumentation within the organization’s diagnostic laboratories. This role is critical in ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and continuous availability of laboratory equipment to support patient diagnostics and clinical services. The Biomedical Engineer will act as a technical expert, collaborating closely with laboratory technologists, pathologists, IT, and other clinical departments.

Key Responsibility Areas:

Equipment Management:

• Perform installation, calibration, preventive maintenance, and corrective repairs on a wide range of laboratory equipment.
• Conduct routine inspections and safety checks to ensure equipment operates within specified parameters and complies with national and international safety standards (e.g., ISO, local regulatory bodies).
• Manage equipment inventory, including tracking assets, maintenance history, and warranty information.
• Coordinate with external vendors for specialized repairs, service contracts, and technical support.

Troubleshoot and Repair:

• Diagnose complex technical issues and perform efficient repairs to minimize equipment downtime and ensure continuous laboratory operations.
• Respond promptly to equipment malfunctions and emergency breakdowns.
• Document all troubleshooting steps, repairs performed, and parts utilized.

Quality Assurance & Compliance:

• Ensure all laboratory equipment meets quality control standards and is regularly calibrated to maintain accuracy and precision.
• Develop and implement equipment maintenance protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs) in accordance with regulatory requirements and best practices.
• Participate in internal and external audits related to equipment performance and regulatory compliance.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation for all equipment, including service records, calibration certificates, and user manuals.

Technical Support and Training:

• Provide technical guidance and support to laboratory staff on the proper operation, daily maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.
• Conduct training sessions for new and existing staff on equipment usage, safety procedures, and minor problem resolution.
• Serve as a liaison between laboratory staff and equipment manufacturers/vendors.

Procurement and Planning:

• Assist in the evaluation and selection of new laboratory equipment, considering technical specifications, cost-effectiveness, clinical needs, and compatibility with existing systems.
• Participate in the planning and commissioning of new laboratory setups or expansions.
• Research and recommend new technologies to enhance laboratory efficiency and diagnostic capabilities.

Safety:

• Ensure all equipment operations and maintenance activities comply with health and safety regulations and organizational policies.
• Identify and mitigate potential risks associated with medical devices and laboratory equipment.

Development Opportunities:

• Provide information reports to the Laboratory Director, Compliance Administrator, Process Coordinator and Technical Expert so that data is available for informed decision-making regarding Engineering Services.
• Opportunities for international exposure with investors, consultants, advisors and other international partners.
