Charge Nurse, Nursing Services (ICU)

Key areas of responsibility:

• Provides professional nursing care within ICU unit according to established standards and procedures.
• Assists in the administration of nursing programs by providing supervisory skills needed in directing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and coordinating nursing care and the delivery of patient care in ICU unit.
• Maintains and updates Inventory.
• Ensures that comprehensive care is given to each patient and evaluates the services rendered.
• Schedules nursing personnel to ensure adequate staffing for each shift.
• Collaborates with Nursing Manager in determining and obtaining equipment and supplies needed in the performance of patient care.
• Assists nursing personnel in identifying patient and family needs.
• Participates in setting patient care standards·
• Counsels relatives when required at the waiting area Co-ordinates with the consultants to ensure that good nursing care is provided.
• Ensures that all physicians’ orders are executed in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• Works with the Deputy Director of Nursing Services to apprise Specialist of special nursing problems and secure guidance for handling.
• Assists the Deputy Director of Nursing Services in the overall management of the assigned nursing areas.
• Keeps up to date appraisal of Unit capability and requirements.
• Keeps an up to date knowledge of the unit and drug changes and instructs staff of such changes.
• Review and inform Deputy Director of Nursing Services regarding nursing unit problems and needs, recommending changes in the policies and procedures.
• Assist the Deputy Director of Nursing Services in the investigation of reports of incidents, suspected infections and patient / doctor complaints and resolves problems or makes recommendation for action.
• Ensures compliance with Quality standards and as well ensures compliance with accreditation standards. Also Identifies appropriate internal controls for department; provides mechanisms to monitor and enforce compliance.
• Ensures the proper disposal of sharps and hospital waste.
• Takes responsibility for the Senior/Staff Nurse who report to the position.
• Provides on job orientation to nursing personnel and keeps them informed of the philosophies, policies, and procedures to be followed in caring for patients and their families.
• Provides for in-service and/or continuing education for the nursing staff in the area.
• Evaluates the work performance of the staff.
• Arranges and recommends vacation schedules for the staff.
• Counsel staff on personal and work problems.
• Plans staff work assignments and schedules.
• Will perform any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.
