Requirements

Education

Master’s in Environmental Science/ Management or Urban and Regional/Rural Planning or Geography or Climate Change or any other relevant subject

Additional Requirements

  • At least 05 years work experience with reputed organisation in country

  • In-depth knowledge and professional experience from climate change adaptation and/or disaster risk management research, programming in Bangladesh

  • Demonstrated experience of climate risk analysis

  • In-depth understanding and knowledge of climate change and WASH related policies/ strategies/ Acts of GoB and the implication of those on the vulnerable communities will be preferred

  • Proficiency in narrative report writing with excellent analytical skill

  • Excellent presentation and conversation skills both in Bangla and English

  • Competency in writing evidence-based result-oriented reports

  • Willingness to work in innovative and unconventional ways when necessary to achieve results

  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective, meaningful, and sustainable relationships with public and private sector partners and other relevant stakeholders

  • Self-motivated, capable to work under extreme pressure, able to plan, prioritise tasks and deliver output meeting deadlines

Job Purpose

WaterAid has been associated (globally as well as locally in Bangladesh) with issues relating to policy and implementation disconnects in the climate resilience and adaptation space. The Climate Resilience Programme of WaterAid works with communities and local government institutions to introduce participatory methods of assessing vulnerability to climate change and disasters that result in bottom-up planning, that responds to risks and vulnerabilities that people face.

The incumbent will analyse climate change and related policies of Bangladesh and relate those to how it is being implemented in the field level/grassroots. S/he will provide support to the projects implemented by WaterAid Bangladesh which are focused on climate resilient WASH, waste management, IWRM, and WASH System Strengthening. S/He will support to understand the gaps in mainstreaming climate change adaptation through the lens of local democratic governance and suggest recommendations for changes in policy and practices related to waste management/ IWRM/ System Strengthening/Climate Resilient WASH.

This role holder will analyse existing scientific literature, hazard and exposure data, vulnerability and risk data, climate and other relevant data to shed light on the climate risks faced by the population in the area.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support WaterAid Bangladesh to understand climate change related impacts on WASH systems, waste management, integrated water resource management (IWRM).

  • Support WaterAid Bangladesh to build capacity of the partner staff on climate change impacts on WASH systems, waste management, IWRM.

  • Collect, review and analyse national climate, disaster risk and environmental policies, frameworks, strategies, plans, scientific literature, and other documents that shed light on the policy and financing space for climate change.

  • Collect and review existing scientific literature, hazard and exposure data, vulnerability and risk data, climate and disaster impact data, statistical data, displacement data, climate data and projections, DRR/adaptation project data or any other already available material or records (from government, NGOs/civil society organisations, multilateral organisations, and other research) that can shed light on the climate risks faced by the population in the area where WaterAid Bangladesh is implementing various projects.

  • Review data, document, analyse present and future climate risk adaptation options, and limits to adaptation in those regions.

  • Link existing GoB policies/strategies/Acts to operation gaps of LGIs (Union Parishad/Municipality/City Corporation/Upazilla Parishads) and provide support to conduct training at LGIs through developing training manuals for LGI representatives and as per requirement.

  • Support to explore opportunities and social engagement in introducing climate resilient WASH initiatives.

  • Ensure documentation process in appropriate manner for climate responsive initiatives of WaterAid Bangladesh.

  • Ensure support in project interventions to relate with International Climate Finance.

  • Represent organisation in different conferences, meetings, and public events as applicable.

  • Understanding that these responsibilities are overarching and may be reviewed from time to time to reflect the organic needs of the organization and various projects that the incumbent will contribute to.

Reportable To: Project Coordinator/Deputy Team Leader – as appropriate

Workstation: WaterAid Bangladesh Country Office in Dhaka

Working Hours: 37.5

Contract Tenure: Fixed term until June 2027 with possibility of extension

Compensation & Other Benefits

Starting monthly gross salary is BDT 92,466/-(flexible for deserving candidate) with admissible benefits including provident fund, gratuity, festival bonus, life insurance for self, health insurance for self, spouse and children, cell phone allowances and other entitlements as per policy provision
