Background/Abilities·

  • The work area must be based in Khulna, Bangladesh.
  • Extensive knowledge of aquaculture (species, production systems, etc.) in Bangladesh·
  • Experience in fieldwork and interface with farmers and government·
  • Excellent communication skills and experience in delivering presentations to a variety of audiences; this includes proficiency in English and Bengali.
  • The ability to meet deadlines, and work independently and as part of a globally diverse team.
  • Reporting Structure and Time Commitment·
  • Report directly to the Senior Fellow for Global Aquaculture Science·
  • One-year contracted position.
  • Domestic/regional travel is required.

Responsibilities & Context

Primary Duties

The primary duties of this position are in support of implementing the requirements of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Verification Platform for farmed shrimp in Khulna, Bangladesh, which has the goal of meeting a performance level of a Seafood Watch Green Recommendation by 2027. Duties include, but not limited to: ·

Becoming knowledgeable of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program, including its theory of change, use, and recognition in the seafood marketplace, projects aimed at aquaculture improvement in South and Southeast Asia, and its Standard for Aquaculture.

  • In particular, become highly knowledgeable of the application of the Seafood Watch Aquaculture Standard to Bangladesh shrimp farming and the materials and methodology used for verifying farm performance. ·

Conduct Farm and Regional Assessments

  • Conduct on-site and regional assessments of shrimp farms, hatcheries, and feed mills in Khulna, Bangladesh for compliance with shrimp farming standards and according to verification materials/methodologies developed by Monterey Bay Aquarium
  • Become proficient in the Verification assurance process to assess farm/area compliance with the Seafood Watch Standard for Aquaculture using the Monterey Bay Aquarium Verification Platform
  • Conduct technical reviews of assessments conducted by other project partners
  • Collaborate with Monterey Bay Aquarium staff to ensure assessments are conducted consistently within and between assessors ·

Deliver information and training to farmers and farmer groups and key project stakeholders.

  •  Provide information and training around project goals and pertinent issues as they relate to environmental assessment criteria to: Farmers, Seafood Companies (e.g. farm input providers, processors), Government, and other stakeholders·

Participate in regular discussions with Monterey Bay Aquarium Global Ocean Conservation team staff and partners

  • Provide progress updates during monthly calls for project members.
  • Engage in regular and ad hoc communication, including the provision of feedback on work plans, activities, successes, and challenges
  • Provide feedback and input on the development of assessment/verification materials (particularly a tablet-based web platform)
  • Initiate and attend meetings with relevant stakeholders in-country in support of the initiative
