Additional Requirements

  • Master of Science (MSc) in Fisheries, Marine or Environmental Science, Zoology, Geography, or Statistics, preferably with a higher degree.
  • Minimum of three-years of experience in non-profit or research sector working on Data Analysis, Data management, GIS Mapping, Research Design, and Report Writing.
  • The position requires strong collaboration and coordination skills, and the ability to manage assigned responsibilities reliably, timely, and independently.
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills in English and Bengali (written and spoken), strong analytical thinking, demonstrated leadership capacity, and previous experience in project coordination are essential.
  • Ability to conceptualize current and future program needs and to develop and implement plans to meet them.

Responsibilities & Context

Job Summary:

The Marine Spatial Analyst supports the science-based community-informed marine conservation by assisting with research design and data management, analysing field data and informing conservation management recommendations, including spatial and temporal priority areas, species protection plans, and contribute to overall WCS Bangladesh research priorities. The Marine Spatial Analyst supports the Marine Program Manager and other coordinators in the development of conservation management recommendations, reports, scientific publications, and skill development.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Support in designing marine megafauna surveys, fisheries investigations, and data collection through citizen science landing site data collectors and fishers.
  • Guide marine data collection, compilation, quality control, and analyses.
  • Manage the marine program’s master data files collected via a network of citizen scientists, ensure that they are up-to-date, and automated for generating summary statistics.
  • Evaluate and analyse field data including (1) generating habitat selection models and predictive maps of species distribution to support marine spatial planning; (2) conducting status assessments of marine wildlife according to fisher catches and landings; and (3) and identifying priority sites to establish marine protected areas for protecting marine megafauna and meeting local fishing needs.
  • Assist with the development of a science-based plan for an integrated network of MPAs and OECMs based on the overlap between marine megafauna and conservation threats.
  • Develop marine spatial plans for balancing the protection threatened marine megafauna with the livelihood needs of local fishermen and sustained fisheries.
  • Report results from WCS Bangladesh marine megafauna surveys, fisheries investigations, shark and ray landing site data collection, Citizen Science Fishermen Safety Network, and support the development of science-based marine conservation recommendations and MPA management plans.
  • Enable the application of decision-making support tools such as MARXAN, Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tools (SMART) and Non-detriment Findings (NDFs).
  • Prepare strategic documents to enable the application of decision-making support tools such as MARXAN, Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tools (SMART) and Non-detriment Findings (NDFs).
  • Build partnerships with managers from government agencies, universities, and other non- governmental organizations and enable platforms for data sharing.
  • Advise on the development of new data collection and analysis tools.Provide support or training to other WCS Bangladesh program staff on marine spatial analyses.
