Responsibilities & Context
The intersection of inequality and climate change demands decisive action to ensure a just transition for workers, particularly in the Ready-made Garment (RMG) sector in Bangladesh. As global fashion brands commit to cutting emissions, there is a risk that RMG workers, who are crucial to this supply chain, will face job losses and deteriorated working conditions if factories cannot adapt to new green standards by 2030. Without integrating workers’ voices into the transition, there is a threat of exacerbating existing inequalities and generating resistance that could stall the necessary shift to renewable energy.
Fashion Forward: Promoting a Just Transition for RMG Workers project aims to build collective action among RMG workers to advocate for a just energy transition, ensuring that the benefits and burdens of this transition are fairly distributed. By focusing on knowledge-sharing and advocacy, the initiative seeks to integrate workers’ perspectives into climate action plans and foster an equitable transition in Bangladesh’s apparel sector.
The key objectives of the Media Fellowship are to explore the impact of energy transition in RMG industry on RMG workers in Bangladesh including economic vulnerability, environment, and public reporting.
About Safety and Rights Society
Established in 2009, Safety and Rights Society (SRS) is a non-profit organization committed to make workplaces safer, protect labor rights, and ensure the health and safety of workers across Bangladesh. Through initiatives such as research, education, training, legal aid, and advocacy, SRS actively pushes for meaningful improvements in workplaces and promotes broader public safety and consumer rights.
In line with its commitment to social justice and sustainability, SRS is also converging on the Just Energy Transition in the labor sector, securing the existing jobs, compelling the stakeholders to create new employment opportunities, and enhance workers’ skills in building a green economy. By raising awareness among workers, employers, civil society, and government officials, SRS emphasizes RMG industry’s compliance with legal regulations and government guidelines to operate efficiently.
Fellowship:
Considering the recent development in world forum due to the COP29 and existing adverse impact of climate change in Bangladesh, the topic of climate justice is widely discussed in the Bangladeshi media. However, there is a huge scope to focus on unjustified energy transition impacting RMG workers invoking inequality on climate actions. As part of the planned action to eliminate inequality and injustice creating enabling environment through building public narrative and momentum around the Just Energy Transition- the media can play a significant role.
