Education & Other Qualifications:
Essential: Minimum Higher Secondary education,
Desirable: University degree in the field of English Language, Healthcare or Interpreting.
Desirable: Certified medical interpreter (CMI) or health care interpreter (HCI)
Experience:
Desirable: Minimum 1 year experience as a medical interpreter in a healthcare setting.
Desirable: Knowledge of basic health terminology
Language:
Essential: English C1 level and Bengali native level
Essential: Excellent speaking and understanding of Chittagoinan dialect and/or Rohingya language.

Responsibilities & Context
Accountabilities:
• Inform project staff of the main cultural nuances to take into account during a meeting, medical consultation or interview with a person from the local population.
• Participate in staff training as well as meetings as an interpreter.
• Act as an interpreter face to face as well as during telephone or radio calls or other telecommunications when necessary.
• Adapt communication to each circumstance by using an appropriate language register while adopting a courteous and diplomatic attitude.
• Translate internal/external MSF documents into local language(s).
• Archive all translated documents.
• Ensure that all equipment provided is maintained, in particular dictionaries or other works belonging to MSF
• Ensure patient medical confidentiality and dignity
MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities:
Interpretation
• Assist in all activities pertaining to interpretation at any project location / wards or in the community for interpretation during interviews, home visits, meetings, focus group discussions, etc.
• Ensure neutrality and accuracy when translating between both the interlocutors, and respect the integrity of the message from both sides
• Immediately declare conflict of interest with a beneficiary or a patient (e.g. personal involvement)
• Declare clearly to the interlocutor if any words / sentences are unclear
• Ask either party to pause, in case there is a long monologue, and bring both parties back together
• Do not solicited or unsolicited advice, medical or otherwise
Translation
• Participate in the creation of any and all documents / SOPs / signages / posters pertaining to training, patient counselling and any other need
• Collaborate in improving project understanding of Rohingya / Burmese / dialects by adding to the BD MSF English / Bangla / Rohingya dictionary on each new learning
Counselling
• Ensure patient / caretaker / family counseling on all matters needed by the project, during admission / discharge / DAMA / death / stay in the ward / others, per the guidance of the medical / para-medical team,
• Attempt to understand cultural nuances and share these with the medical / para-medical teams
• Help interpret non-verbal cues and expressions to improve understanding of mental status of the patient / caretaker / community member
• Modulate facial expression, voice and volume depending on patient / caretaker / staff situation
• Immediately escalate any distress signals not understood by the medical / para-medical team
Compensation & Other Benefits
Contract and Benefits:
– Salary per month according to level three (3) of the internal MSF salary grid (BDT 45,000/- gross). Salary is not negotiable. Income tax deduction from salary will be applicable based on the current income tax rule.
– 2 annual leave days per month worked.
– Medical insurance for employee and direct dependents based on Health Care Policy- Locally Hired Staff (LHS).
Others:
– 2 Festival Bonuses after completion of one year of uninterrupted service.
– There are no provisions for relocation.
