Education

  • Master of Science (MSc)
  • Training as evidenced by a Masters Level degree in Occupational Therapy, from an institution accredited by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT)
  • Licensed & Registered to practice in Trinidad & Tobago, with the Council for Professions Related to Medicine.
  • A minimum of 3 years post training experience in evaluating and treating infants, children and adolescents with developmental disabilities and/or medical challenges

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:

The Occupational Therapist would be required to:

  • Organize, plan and direct relevant activities, related to their professional scope of practice as an Occupational Therapist in the Department of Pediatric Medicine, North-Central Regional Health Authority.
  • Evaluate, diagnose and record the nature of the client’s general daily functioning as well as specific strengths and weaknesses, relevant to their ADL’s by using clinical and observational assessments, as well as special standardized evaluation tools and instruments, per scope of practice and established international standards; specifically, but not limited to, the following areas:
    • Daily living activities – self-care, feeding, relevant assistive devices;
    • Fine-motor skills rehabilitation—motor control, pre-writing/writing skills, bilateral integration, motor planning;
    • Perceptual processing—body scheme, visual closure, spatial relations, position in space;
    • Sensory processing—tactile, proprioceptive, vestibular, visual.
  • Provide treatments by developing and revising individualized plans of care tailored to each client’s needs.
  • Establish and maintain a system of written documentation that is professional, efficient and accountable.
  • Attend case conferences concerning client’s welfare and represent the professional viewpoint of occupational therapists of the Department of Pediatric Medicine multi-disciplinary team.
  • Keep and maintain client’s records by recording and updating evaluations, changes, progress, and treatments.
  • Design, make and fit adaptive devices such as splints, braces and switches according to scope of practice as well as to medical prescription.
  • Attend case conferences concerning client’s welfare and represent the professional viewpoint of occupational therapists of the Department of Pediatric Medicine multi-disciplinary team.
  • Perform other related duties as directed by the organizational relationship.

KEY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of principles, practices of Occupational Therapy.
  • Knowledge of rehabilitative treatment techniques in managing clients with developmental delays, neurodevelopmental disabilities and medical challenges, of multiple age groups within the pediatric population.
  • Ability to plan and direct therapeutic activities of individuals or groups and to perform professional assessments of treatments in relation to the progress and changing needs of patients.
  • Ability to demonstrate and to instruct patients in various arts and crafts.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public
  • Knowledge of the regulations and practice standards of (Pediatric) Occupational Therapy.
  • Knowledge of the materials, equipment and instruments used in activities of daily living for the pediatric population of all ages, especially those with severe neurodevelopmental disabilities.
  • Intermediate Team working skills.
  • Intermediate Organizational and Flexibility skills.
  • Skill in dealing with infants, children and adolescents with developmental disabilities and/or medical challenges.
  • Skill in using age-appropriate equipment and materials required by infants, children and adolescents with developmental disabilities and/or medical challenges.

  • Ability to achieve and maintain empathy with patients.
  • Ability to understand, interpret and apply a physicians’ written or oral referrals and requests regarding treatment to be administered.
  • Ability to create programs that tailor to different learning styles of caregiver.
  • Ability to manage patients that may be slow in recovery.
  • Willingness to participate in team meetings, case conferences and in-service teaching/learning activities of the Department of Pediatric Medicine.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other allied health professionals (including Speech Language Pathologists, Physiotherapists, Special Educators, Behavioral Therapists), Medical Doctors, Medical Social Workers and other clinicians, other employees and the public.
