  • Demonstrated ability to meet strict deadlines and work independently and cooperatively with team members in a diverse cultural environment.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal), coordination, managing skills.
  • Strong problem identification, analytical and solving skills.
  • Good interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Skilled in working in computers particularly operating MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and internet browsing.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision, lead team of diverse people, can travel to remotes places and can cope with multiple stress including fragile contexts.

Responsibilities & Context

  • Red Cross – Red Crescent movement is the largest volunteer organization in the world. Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) is a national society of the movement, constituted on 31 March 1973 by the President’s Order No. 26 of 1973 with retrospective effect from 16 December 1971. This is the biggest humanitarian organization in Bangladesh. As an auxiliary to the government, the Society provides humanitarian assistance to vulnerable people over the last 53 years and has undertaken a wide range of activities in humanitarian response, disaster management, livelihood, health, WASH, capacity building and in promoting Red Cross/ Red Crescent ideals and principles.
  • BDRCS, under its Population Movement Operation (PMO), has been providing humanitarian services since 2017 for the displaced Rohingya people from Rakhine state of Myanmar who have been sheltered in different camps under Ukhiya and Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar. Currently, BDRCS is looking for a suitable Bangladeshi national for the following position under PMO, Cox’s Bazar:
  • Duration of Contract: Upto 31/12/2024 (with possibility of extension).
  • Workstation: Various Health Facilities of PMO, Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar.
  • Reportable to: Manager- Health & PSS in line with the concern Medical Officer, PMO.

Job Summary

  • Under the supervision of Medical Doctor, Optometrist is responsible for the conduct eye exams using optometric equipment and general diagnostic interpretation diagnose and treat ocular disease, prescribe, fit, and adjust eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other vision aids and recommend appropriate patient follow-up and care options for the Provision of Eye Care Interventions in BDRCS Health Facility in BDRCS’ Population Movement Operation in Cox Bazar based on approved workplan and budgets.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • The position will closely work with the Medical Officer (MO) and will assist the Medical Officer to get patient information and identifying patients’ problem.
  • S/he also will conduct a subjective evaluation of eye health problems including refraction through a comprehensive eye examination.
  • Identify refractive errors, cataracts, and other eye health diseases, and conduct screening of diabetic retinopathy, DR (diabetic retinopathy) image capturing and grading and DR image storing.
  • Assist Medical officer in confirming the diagnosis of all eye health problems including DR gradings. Ensure drugs and spectacles requirement.
  • Conduct follow-ups of post-surgery patients i.e. cataracts and maintain records.
  • Conduct teleconsultation with the ophthalmologist of a partner eye hospital for surgery cases as and when required.
  • Manage ocular conditions within FDMN framework, referring cataract patients for further evaluation.
  • Dispense and adjust eyewear and vision aids tailored to individual needs.
  • Coordinate patient follow-up and ensure appropriate care pathways are established.
  • Educate and counsel patients on visual hygiene and provide guidance on preventive optical care.
  • Provide exceptional customer service while upholding clinic standards.
  • Supervise staff and contribute to practice development within FDMN context.
  • S/he will refer and track the patients who need further treatment from the Eye Hospital, Cox’s Bazar and need follow-up from the eye unit.
  • Willingness to work for outreach/subjective evaluation activities at the community level.
  • Support and maintain eye medication stock, requisition, and inventory.
  • Support data management and reporting in software as and when required.
  • Support the visits of different stakeholders and explain the activities as required.
