Responsibilities & Context

  • Clean and arrange the workplace upon reporting for duty.
  • Stationed at designated workstations, adhering to assigned tasks.
  • Follow standard criteria for patient identification and blood collection for various tests.
  • Carefully review request papers to understand the nature of the required tests and arrange appropriate tubes for collection.
  • Seek instructions from the Senior Phlebotomist, SHO, Specialist, or Consultant if there is any uncertainty about a test.
  • Ensure the reception and collection of specimens in accordance with the standard operating procedure (SOP) for the respective laboratory section.
  • Remain at assigned workstations until notified to move elsewhere.
  • Keep all necessary syringes, tubes, and tourniquets ready for blood extraction in specific locations in the Sample Collection Room, Cabins, and Wards.
  • Know the exact location of equipment to avoid fumbling in the presence of patients.
  • Have knowledge of skin sterilization and the position of veins in the arm and dorsum.
  • Inspect the veins of the patient and inform them politely about the slight pain due to needle insertion.
  • Distract the patient’s attention during blood collection to minimize fear and anxiety.
  • Know the local application of anesthetic spray for nervous females and children.
  • Use a butterfly needle for extracting blood from children and individuals with very thin veins.
  • Extract blood in one go with minimal discomfort to the patient.
  • Keep handy all necessary articles such as sterile cotton, 70% alcohol, iodine, band-aids, etc.
  • Use proper anticoagulants and tubes for blood collections for various purposes.
  • Draw blood according to the order of draw: Blood culture, plain tube, coagulation tube, heparin tube, violet tube, fluoride tube.
  • Seek permission from them if needing to leave the area for any collection in other areas or for any other reason.
  • Responsible for the collection of blood and other specimens.
  • Place CBC samples on the rotator, shake slowly for coagulation study, and keep whole blood tubes standing for coagulation.
  • Place these samples in the specific rack for transfer to the lab by the Specimen Carrier.
  • Take special care when receiving samples for Histopathology/Cytology and specimens for culture sensitivity and staining.
  • Know the correct technique to take Throat/Nasal/Eye/Ear/Wound swabs.
  • Enter any received culture specimen in the register kept in the Reception area.
  • Write name, time of collection, and date on each request paper/bill form to trace the person who has taken the sample in case of any enquiry.
