Responsibilities & Context

Cyclone Remal Response in Bagerhat Project

Time period: 6 months

Uttaran is an NGO working in Bangladesh since 1985 to uphold rights and entitlements and to improve the socio-economic condition of the poor and disadvantaged community people. Uttaran is a people-centered organization using a rights-based approach to alleviate poverty, diversify livelihood opportunities and empower poor communities of Bangladesh.

Supported by the SIDA PBA, Uttaran is implementing “Cyclone Remal Response in Bagerhat” project for selected southwestern coastal districts in Bagerhat District. Uttaran invites applications for the vacant position titled- Project Officer for this project.

Reports to: Project coordinator

To implement the project, Uttaran is seeking the following position for its project interventions area in Bagerhat districts.

The project aims to save lives and reduce suffering among vulnerable communities in Bangladesh affected by floods and food insecurity. Key outcomes include providing cash assistance for immediate food and nutrition needs, increasing access to treatment and prevention of severe acute malnutrition (SAM), enhancing sexual and reproductive health services for women and adolescent girls, and improving environmentally friendly and inclusive water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services. Additionally, the plan focuses on strengthening gender-based violence (GBV) protection services, integrating mental health and psychosocial support, conducting disaster risk reduction training, and carrying out integrated awareness sessions for targeted beneficiaries.

QUALIFICATIONS AND JOB DESCRIPTION

Purpose of the position:

The Psychosocial Support (PSS) Officer will be responsible for implementing of PSS and Mental health wellbeing activities. Psycho-social support includes individual and group counseling sessions for the community people who are suffering from psychological distress are identified through clinical interviews and screening tools.

Scope:

The PSS Officer reports to the programme officer and s/he will be responsible for providing psycho-social support which includes individual and group counseling sessions for the community people who are suffering from psychological distress are identified through clinical interviews and screening tools. The PSS Officer must work in compliance with Uttaran policies and procedures.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan, prepare and deliver PSS sessions and social cohesion activities to disaster affected people.
  • Prepare daily plans prior to every PSS session in line with the project demands.
  • Prepare appropriate materials and/or visual aids in advance of the session
  • Deliver PSS sessions to targeted groups; facilitate engaging sessions that encourage individuals’ active participation.
  • Supporting the preparation of tools related to the announcement, application and selection processes of the beneficiaries by working closely with the MEAL team;
  • Supporting the identification and selection processes of project participants in close cooperation with the MEAL team.

  • Ensure that all assessments, follow-ups and weekly and progress reports are completed in a timely manner
  • Ensure inclusive participation by following an age-, gender-, and types of disabilities sensitive approach.
  • Build trusting relationships with participants
  • Ensure the activities and sessions are following safe learning practices at all times.
  • Follow up on the participants’ wellbeing, attendance and specific needs.
  • Report on the number of individuals, participations, achievements, and new registration requests; update Program and technical team on any issues, challenges or gaps in implementation.
  • Ensure that all data collected is entered and reported in a timely manner (monthly)
  • Collaborate closely with MEAL team to monitor activities with existing PSS, social cohesion.
  • Respect and apply all principles of PSEA and demonstrate high commitment to report any sexual exploitation and sexual abuse.
  • Job location: Morelganj, Bagerhat.
