Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Law from a recognized institution and must have enrollment in Bar Council with valid advocateship license.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience practicing law, preferably in legal aid, human rights, or refugee support.
  • Strong understanding of Bangladesh legal system, including laws related to human rights, gender-based violence, and refugee rights.
  • Proven ability to manage legal cases independently, including drafting legal documents and conducting legal research.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders and vulnerable populations.
  • Fluency in Bengali and English languages, both written and spoken.
  • Computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and legal case management software.

Responsibilities & Context

  • Summary of Responsibilities:
  • The Senior Legal Officer will lead the provision of comprehensive legal services to vulnerable populations under the ECHO funded IRC Support Project. They will manage legal case documentation, conduct community outreach and education, facilitate mediation and conflict resolution, coordinate legal assistance and referrals, build capacity through training and mentoring, and ensure effective monitoring and reporting. The role requires strong legal expertise, communication skills, and a commitment to human rights and legal aid principles to achieve impactful outcomes.
  • Job Responsibilities:
  • 1. Legal Service Provision:
  • Provide legal counseling, mediation, and litigation support services to vulnerable populations within the host community.
  • Conduct intake interviews, assess legal needs, and develop strategies for legal assistance.
  • Manage and oversee the documentation and filing of legal cases, including maintaining accurate records and case files.
  • Prepare legal documents such as affidavits, petitions, and agreements as needed.
  • 2. Community Outreach and Education:
  • Develop and deliver legal awareness sessions and workshops for community members to inform them about their rights and available legal services.
  • Collaborate with community volunteers to facilitate outreach activities and disseminate Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials.
  • 3. Mediation and Conflict Resolution:
  • Facilitate mediation sessions to resolve disputes and conflicts within the community, providing a neutral and professional approach.
  • Provide need-based transportation support and refreshments for mediation participants.
  • 4. Coordination and Referral:
  • Coordinate with local authorities, including police stations and legal aid committees, to support clients in filing complaints, General Diaries (GD), and First Information Reports (FIR).
  • Facilitate referrals of clients to District Legal Aid Committees (DLAC) and other service providers, ensuring access to comprehensive legal assistance.
  • Provide need-based transportation support for clients requiring referrals.
  • 5. Capacity Building and Training:
  • Conduct training sessions for community volunteers on legal procedures, human rights law, and relevant conventions (CEDAW, CRC).
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior legal staff and volunteers involved in legal aid activities.
  • Organize capacity-building sessions for local stakeholders on legal rights and procedures.
  • 6.Employment Monitoring and Reporting:
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of legal services provided, documenting case outcomes and client feedback.
  • Prepare regular reports on legal activities, achievements, challenges, and lessons learned for internal and donor purposes.
  • Additional Key Responsibilities:Legal Research: Conduct legal research on pertinent issues affecting the project’s beneficiaries, ensuring up-to-date knowledge and expertise in relevant legal areas.

Status: Contractual Full Time
