Responsibilities & Context

Community Development Centre (CODEC) invites application for the position of ‘‘Specialist-Burmese Language Training and Material Development’’ from the potential Bangladeshi nationals for implementing ‘‘Education for Rohingya Refugee and Host Community Children in Bangladesh’’ (ERRHCCB) Project funded by UNESCO.

The working location will be in Cox’s Bazar. 

Duties and Responsibilities:       

  • Technical Coordination: Act as CODEC’s focal person for technical coordination and collaboration between CODEC and partner organisations engaged in the Burmese Language Training for Teachers activity.

  • Curriculum Development: Provide Technical inputs on the language training curriculum, contents, and materials including teachers’ guidebooks and learners’ books, with particular reference to the Burmese language components. Coordinate and support the Language Expert Team to integrate improvements as required.

  • Leadership and Mentoring: With the support of the Language Expert Team, lead, guide and provide mentoring support to the 25 Master Trainers by providing basic orientation, organizing and facilitating ToT on language training, follow up in class and in practical sessions.

  • Training and Workshops: In coordination with the Language Expert Team, assist in organizing language training for teachers, students, and staff/supervisors to improve communication and integration. Conduct workshops to facilitate a better understanding of language-learning strategies.       

  • Cascading Support: Support the establishment of Burmese language classes in the camps, providing teaching support to ensure accurate and sensitive delivery of lessons.       

  • External Support and Coordination: Collaborate and coordinate with technical educational experts from UNESCO, Dhaka University, and other agencies to create or adapt educational programs for refugees, including basic & numeracy literacy, language acquisition, and vocational training.

  • Translation: Provide written and oral translations between Burmese and other languages (such as Rohingya, Bangla, and/or English) to support communication in education, content development, competency framework, materials development etc.       

  • Interpretation: Serve as an interpreter during meetings, discussions, and workshops between the refugees and various organizations, including field visits.       

  • Resource Development: Assist in the creation of language-learning materials for Burmese and other languages, ensuring cultural and contextual appropriateness.       

  • Regularly participate in the Technical Team as well as Language Development Group meetings under the Educational Sector, UN Consortia and INGO Consortia.       

  • Support to Cox’s Bazar Project Team by engaging in the technical team meetings arranged by CODEC/UNESCO/Dhaka University/International Language institutions/Consultants and providing technical feedback and support in line with UNESCO’s standards. 

Qualifications and Experience:        

  • Education: Master’s degree in any discipline or Education,languages, linguistics or any other relevant subject. Expert knowledge on Burmese Language will be given due consideration in lie of the Master’s degree.         

  • Experience: At least 5 years of experience in Education, Content Development, Curriculum Framework Development, Language Training Designing & Implementation, Facilitation and/or M&E.

  • Experience working in Cox’s Bazar with local NGOs, Research Firms, International Organizations, or UN agencies is an asset. 

Skills and Competencies:

  • Proven ability to implement projects preferably in emergency, crisis settings or development projects relating to education, skills development, adult education or similar.

  • Good interpersonal, communication and coordination skills, including good reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in the Burmese Language (Myanmar) and English.       

  • Good technical understanding of education, preferably adult education, and the ability to improve teachers’ and trainers’ competencies (in terms of content knowledge of Burmese language, pedagogy and andragogy).       

  • Ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and effectively with people of different cultural backgrounds, and the ability to adapt communication to different audiences.·       

  • Flexibility to adjust work schedules, priorities, and capacity to work effectively under pressure. ·       

  • Experience in utilizing digital tools and platforms to enhance educational practices.   ·       

  • Good computer skills, proficiency in the use of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams, Canva/photoshop etc.).  

Languages:

  • Fluency in English and Burmese Language (Myanmar), both in writing and speaking, is required.        

  • Knowledge of Bangla, Chittagongnian and/or Rohingya language is an asset. 

PSEA & Safeguarding:

  • Ensure the safety of team members (in respect to Prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse – PSEA) from any harm, abuse, neglect, harassment and exploitation to achieve the programme’s goals on safeguarding implementation.

  • Act as a key source of support, guidance and expertise on safeguarding for establishing a safe working environment.

  • Practice, promote and endorse the issues of safeguarding policy among team members and ensure the implementation of safeguarding standards in every course of action.

  • Follow the safeguarding reporting procedure in case any report able incident takes place, encourage others to do so.

  • S/he should abide by the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC)’s six core principles on Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) policy.
