Responsibilities & Context
Overall Job Description:
The Dairy Extension Officer will be delegated with overall field implementation responsibility to lead the sustainable and productive dairy value chain model in southwest Bangladesh with expert support this includes planning, implementing, monitoring, project reporting, and coordinating the implementation of the activities as per the project components, with the preparation of detailed annual work-plans, targets, and budgets of the field activities.
The position would be based in Khulna/ Jashore/ Satkhira and have to maintain close coordination with other team members of Solidaridad Network Asia in Bangladesh.
Dairy Extension Officer of Solidaridad Network Asia would report to the Programme Officer-Dairy of Solidaridad Network Asia.
Duties and Accountabilities:
- Mobilize the farmers and develop the collection center-centric farmers’ cluster in coordination with Pran Dairy and relevant stakeholders
- Assist in the Design and implementation of programs as per activity plan to promote sustainable practices in the dairy communities, including Arla’s Big 5 (Feed Efficiency, Feed Balance, Animal Robustness, Manure Handling and Land-use) farm practices adapted to BD dairy conditions.
- Strengthening dairy farming clusters for interactive farmers-to-farmers learning for adoption of good farming practices, access to resources efficient ecosystem services, and market uptake of the business model by the smallholders to improve quality of milk, reduce post-harvest losses, and enhance overall market competitiveness.
- Ensure the Development of innovative dairy farms and promote smart dairy farming practices through efficient use of resources, circularity, and climate-smart technologies to improve increase in milk yield and quality.
- Develop the capacity of the smallholder dairy farmers on good dairy practices (improved housing, feeding management, fodder production, hygienic milking, calf management, pregnant and lactating cow management, vaccination, deworming and disease management) to reduce production cost, improve efficiency, and increase yield and income in collaboration with the private sector partners.
- Facilitate the capacity building of field staff, lead farmers, project participants, CLSP, community mobilizers, and entrepreneurs on efficient farm management, enterprise farming, business plan, business operation etc.
- Assist in the promotion of awareness of sustainable dairy farming practices and the benefits of green dairy projects through community outreach, workshops, and public campaigns in Collaboration with consortium partners.
- Assist line manager in the process of project budget utilization and ensure efficient use of financial resources allocated for the projects within the committed timeframe
- Support efforts to sensitize the community, local people, line departments, and relevant stakeholders in developing a dairy forum
- Carry out process documentation, and collect and compile required information from farmers, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders.
- Support in developing multiple entrepreneurs such as CLSPs, community mobilizers, fodder entrepreneurs, hydroponic entrepreneurs, and biogas plant operators.
- Support to promote green manure management and organic fertiliser production for the reduction of direct and indirect GHG emissions from livestock.
- Support efforts to sensitize the community, local people, line departments, and relevant stakeholders in developing a dairy forum.
- Any other required support to implement the project at the field level as per organization needs and management decisions.
